There was so much hard work and love that went into creating that space that it sent both Rhea and I into a bit of a tail spin. I need the pics to know it even happened!
So here is a bit of a call out to those of you who may have taken pictures of the actual party. WE NEED THEM!
I know I saw lots of cameras snapping pictures of the smoking caterpillar on the mushroom and hopefully the djs and dancing as well. Perhaps a few around the fire, the fire dancing, the bar and the craziness. If anyone can help us compile a bit of these memories (to replace the ones we lost) we would be very grateful!
Thanks for your support and keep checkin back for exciting updates coming soon!
-The Rabbit

Pre-Party Pictures! I think it is THE MOST important thing and one of the biggest indicators of success.
I just walked into my side job (the other one I must keep so that The Chocolate Rabbit keeps hopping) and I am greeted with moodiness and crankiness from one of my comrades. Even just a simple "I am sorry, I'm not feeling the greatest today" would make a big difference! I'm just about to start working and now wish that I wasn't. It is really sad when people exert patriarchal and unkind control over a business and hence make people feel uncomfortable. This makes it harder for me to be happy and chipper with customers and creates a culture of fear. A cooperative business is the last place fear should exist! I remember to not take it personally and to work with the same ethic and joy which I try to put in all of my endeavors.

This anecdote is merely a side note to emphasize how awesome I think that Rhea is! Even when we deal with serious or unpleasant matters there is always always kindness and understanding. I think we both know that the last thing we want to do is hurt one another and this confidence leads to much better times and much better chocolate! I am very thankful for all these learning experiences!

We have a lot of work coming up with Northwest Veg fest and I have planned my schedule around the chocolate making and booth set up work we must do. We are excited to be a part of Proper Eats booth (thank you soooooo much Piper and James!) and have pre-party jitters. :)

Thanks for your continued support and make sure to mark NW Veg Fest on your calendars!
-The Rabbit

continual.motion

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ueX-mP6H5AM/SBgUeywXARI/AAAAAAAAAHE/WlyIkYORfA8/s400/DSC_1464(web).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5194924689425105170" />

Things have been moving smooth as chocolate with the rabbit. The beginning of Spring has proved to be filled with inspiration and creativity, and we continue to have new ideas and new tasty treats! We are still in the process of navigating the creation of our website as we are on a quest to have our vision come alive and have found that sometimes things take longer than planned-something we seem to find out often. =) But, things are coming along and we finally have some new pictures for the website and potentially a new designer. We are also busy getting ready for the NW Veg Fest, and have a new flavor that will be making its sweet debut this Thursday at Proper Eats and Peoples!!-- Crunchy Cacao, a crunchy chocolate with himalayan salt, like every new chocolate, it is my new favorite! And yes, we are still working on that lovely packaging, I will be sooo very happy once we have something beautiful and sustainable, if only uniting with "green" functional boxes was as easy as making chocolate. Deliveries as usual all over Portland. Sometimes I really wish that the places we sell were closer together, but at least the chocolate is available in every neighborhood.

I stopped into Proper Eats as usual and looked in their case at something that hasn't been there before. Two boxes of Wingnut Truffles (a really awesome local vegan chocolatier) with truffles sold individually, like we have been doing. I have never noticed Wingnut selling their truffles like that before. I also realized it's been a while since I have had any other truffles other than our own. Wingnut truffles are vegan and beautiful. They are not raw and this is what sets us apart, but they are beautiful nonetheless. It suddenly dawned on me that Wingnut Truffles look beautiful and perfect because they are molded. I went online and looked at molds and sure enough I saw the exact designs reflected in the molds. The Chocolate rabbit presently doesn not use molds. We have looked at molds in the past, but none have really suited our style and so we have passed, but I'm starting to think it may be time to try again.

To Mold or not to Mould

So here are the pros and cons to molding our Radical Raw Chocolate Rabbit Truffles
Pros:
takes less time
looks "perfect"
total consistency in size and shape (people seem to like this a lot)
competitive on a "professional" chocolate level

Cons:
Less work and time, means less intention and energy put into each chocolate. I believe part of the reason our chocolates heal and taste so good is because we hold healthy and loving intention which is put into each truffle by both Rhea and I. It's pretty intense actually.....
Every chocolate looks the same. (sometimes I like the individual variation)
Looking like every other truffle out there because all the molds look similar.

I think I may try to get some molds and give it a shot. We can see what we think and, maybe, you will see molded Chocolate Rabbit Truffles in the future. Or maybe we will continue to make each one meticulously by hand.
We will have to find away to give that same intention and energy, even if we liked the look of the molds.

Thanks for everyone's support!
- The Chocolate Rabbit

Development

What have we been doing???
After the party, Rhea and I were so tired. We were tired of working in addition to other work. We were tired of having the house turned upside downwards and inside outwards with Wonderland, and we were tired of being together all our waking minutes and talking every 5 seconds when we were apart. The Chocolate Rabbit has slumbered a bit as we have recovered. It is at times like this though that I think we both do some of our best thinking and figuring out exactly what it is we want.

A lot has developed on my end. Jacob and I are back together and our relationship is better than ever before, I am workin a few days a week at a radical collective cafe "The Red and Black" and nannying for an adorable 7 month old girl one other day a week. I haven't stopped cooking (although I did take a 2 week hiatus right right after the party... I have never eaten out so frequently in my life.)

My latest challenge is a vegan passover feast for a group Jake knows through work. It is quite a challenge coming up with vegan kosher for passover stuff because most of the traditional dishes call for eggs. Tofu and Ener-G is not kosher for passover. We are compromising on one dish with tofu and two with Ener-g. Many of the other dishes are raw (including an amazing chocolate mousse!) It's funny that raw stuff is the only type of food which is almost always kosher, vegan, and kosher for passover. Kosher for passover is so complicated, so using raw recipes made things easier.

The Chocolate Rabbit is now looking to develop our raw caramel and sell it in stores. Look for that soon soon! I hope everyone sticks with us. We need your support (and love of chocolate) so much!!!

Love always,
Jo

The First Interview!

Hip! Thankfully we've had a bit of that over the week (or at least some time to ourselves) although I have lost my voice and Miss Rhea is busy busy with house guests. But the party...
The party was amazing!! Awesome!! More than we expected and almost perfect.
The house was Wonderland. We had a chill out room with pillows and relax space upstairs. John projected Alice in Wonderland on the ceiling and then split it with 4 mirrors attached to the fan. The food room was our tea party, complete with a drunken mouse, the kitchen was bathed in blue light and little cut out rabbits danced along the perimeter. The door way to the basement was a rabbit hole. There was a hula hoop in the door way and a trippy vortex leading into the decked out stair case. Door knobs, doors to no where, clocks, clocks, and mirrors. Enter into the basement where a large caterpillar sat in a black light mushroom field and smoked and shared his hooka. There was a rose bush (painted half red) bread and butterflies behind the bar, excellent beer, champagne, mixed drinks, and a large mural of our rabbit painted behind the dj.

The party started at 8:30 with a few preliminary guests arriving to help with the final touches. The first djs Johnny and Ethan arrived soon after and the music started up. It didn't stop until 4:30 in the morning! People came, sampled chocolate, danced, ate the beautiful array of raw food, and then more people came and then more and then more. All in all, probably 150-175 people came through the house that night. The street was lined with cars and every room was filled. There was a fire and fire dancing out back and the djs and The Repair were amazing. Thank you to everyone. Honestly, I have yet to see pictures from the night. As soon as I get my hands on some, I will post.
Rhea and my next project is to set up our web site and maybe add a few more accounts. Also organize organize organize.
Thanks for everyones support.
With Love

The Chocolate Rabbit Release Revelry!

Yes
You heard right, The Chocolate Rabbit is hosting a party and this is sure to mean lots of yummy goodness.
Rhea and I have been working hard hard hard on making the party a reality. The theme (Alice in Wonderland) came to me just two weeks ago and we have been busy making costumes and decorations ever since. I will be Alice (a give in because of the blond hair). Miss Rhea will be the queen of hearts, Jeff -the caterpillar, my love Jacob - the Madhatter, Blair - the rabbit, and hopefully many many many more.
The house.... the house will be turned into a Wonderland thanks to many people's creative efforts. We have mushrooms, a trippy rabbit hole, a tea party, bread and butterflys, a mural of our rabbit, mushrooms, rabbits, colored lights, roses and did I mention mushrooms?!
We have so many people contributing their time, connections, and access to cheap kegs. It's amazing to see so many people coming together. I really appreciate everyones help!! The challenging aspect has been coordinating everything. Djs, band, sound, food, decorations, costumes, making better friends with the neighbors, and our chocolate orders. I'm very nervous and hoping that it all comes together in a timely fashion so I at least maintain some sanity.
The one lucky thing has been that I don't have to work on anything outside of the Chocolate business and the party. Special thanks go out to Little Red Bike Cafe in North Portland for firing me because they claimed I said "meat is disgusting" and giving me access to unemployment (my Scholarship for Self Discovery) for the last three and a half months. It has been truly glorious to be making the same amount of money doing exactly what I want as opposed to having to work full time. (more details on this later)
Today Miss Rhea is making chocolate. I am making bread and butterflies, decorating our mushroom field, contacting everyone I know who may have access to a PA (yep we don't even have sound yet.... scary) And cleaning cleaning cleaning. It's been great having all the crafting going on, but many people sure make a mess.
After the party we will be sure to update with pictures and stories. Rhea picked them up today.
They look great (because Jordyn's bunnies are awesome) but next time we are going somewhere local. But Kinkos worked in a crunch.

In addition I made some chocolate this afternoon (5 Wild Jungle Peanut Butter cups and 10 Theobroma Cacao truffles) I will be getting up at 4 to make some more before work. If all goes well that will include some Mayan money, a few mint, and maybe some more PB cups. I love peanut butter..... !!
Have a lovely evening!
M.J.

Meditating on chocolate

I was awake this morning at 5 AM! Why did I get up at 5 am? To make chocolate in quiet meditative solitude.
I thought about making chocolate the night before but could not bring myself to go into a kitchen full of people after a 2 hour long bus ride from Barbur Blvd to downtown to home! Sometimes I just reach my limit in terms of social interaction and need to choose my room over public space.
And so I woke up early to the quiet and solitude of the morning. Nobody else is crazy enough to get up that early. I slowly melted, mixed and banged pots and bowls and probably woke up one or more of my roommates who have bedrooms near to the kitchen, but it was a grand time! I made my small little batch of three layered theobroma cacao and still had enough time to catch 15 more minutes of sleep before work..... yawn.... I must get to bed again soon because tomorrow I actually have to work at 5 AM. I can guarantee the getting up will not be nearly as meditative as chocolate. Sweet Dreams!

I dream in colored chocolate

Rhea and I have been very busy lately. I can't believe Rhea is in school with a full load this semester, finishing up stuff from her last semester in Central America, working, co-running the movie night at the Green House (more about this later), and still making time for chocolate. It's fucking incredible!
I have been pretty busy myself, but in the height of my craziness I made some time to go to the Blossoming Lotus. They always have fantastic raw food and I once again had an amazing dinner. But my real reason for going down to that part of town was some sneaky market research. A place . .. (which shall remain unnamed) sells raw chocolate!!

I walked into the place . . very nonchalant. Looked to the right and the left and up and down. The floors are so clean. People were laughing, talking, dating.... I spot the chocolate case! I do a pretty good impression of a tall blond so I put on my most innocent dumb face and walk over. I try to make small talk with a few tables along the way, just so as not to arouse suspicion. I muster up some confidence and talk to the lady behind the counter. She is young... probably my age so I know the demographic well. I soften her with a smile. "Which of these are the raw chocolates pray do tell?" I say. She smiles back "All the ones on the left of the case on the third shelf."

I look . . there are 6 different choices. Nothing is particularly revolutionary to look at (thank goodness). "One of each" I proclaim! "And two of that one... the one with the ginger, to the right of the plain one, yes that one, I mean two of that one....... Thanks."
She stands up and drops the bag on the floor. All the chocolates spill out. She is trying to distract me, the tall dumb blond disguise did not work! "One of each" I say again. She gets them together for me and I pay. F-ing expensive things! Small chocolates, plain, and $3 a piece! All my tip money :(
I try one, it is hard. She asks if I know how chocolate is made. I say "No, I don't know anything, please tell me everything about the competition... I mean chocolate"
She tells me. I go home that night, my head swirling in chocolate. Melts at 90 degrees,76 degrees, agave, cacao, coconut, raw, chocolate, essential oil . .
I dream the best truffle ever! Beautiful, three kinds of chocolate, authentic, and perfect. I made a small batch last week. The best!
I am off to make some now!!

conquering.temptation.

fasting + chocolate making = interesting....and we did it!

day three of a ten day fast and we found ourselves in the kitchen of the little red bike brewin up a yummy batch of chocolates.

i love cleansing. each time i do a cleanse i find myself overcome with an incredible sense of energy and connectness. i don't just walk through the streets, i soar- all of my senses expand-and i radiate-with joy and gratitude for the knowing that i am the source of my own creation, and for all that there is on this wonderful earth!

so yes, today was similar to everyday in the little red bike kitchen- full of life and lots of love- the difference was, we weren't eating half of the chocolate, and despite the challenge, we came out with some kickass truffles and fabulous new ideas!! It's my first attempt at something like this, but unless Rhea gives me some constructive criticism, I think this is what it's going to be for now.

Welcome beautiful healthy people!
The Chocolate Rabbit invites you to devour a delicious decadence once enjoyed only by the gods!

Raw Cacao!

Seriously . . . the official name for cacao is “Theobroma cacao.” which means: “cacao, food of the gods.”

Your mouth will melt and your body will be happy too!

THIS CHOCOLATE IS GOOD FOR YOU!

Here are a few quick reasons why:

The cacao is raw! Raw Foods are foods that contain enzymes. In general, heating food over 116 degrees F destroys enzymes. Cooked food is devoid of these beneficial enzymes! Furthermore cooking food changes the molecular structure of the food and renders it toxic. Living and raw foods also have enormously higher nutrient values than the foods that have been cooked.

The truffles are vegan and organic! Everyone can enjoy them, they are environmentally friendly, and the addition of dairy to chocolate may block the absorption of all the antioxidants naturally found in cacao..

Cacao is rich in antioxidants! When compared with red wine and green tea, cacao was the richest source of antioxidants. Antioxidants help protect cells from free radicals which reduces your risk of cancer and slows aging!

Sweetened with Agave nectar! Agave nectar is a natural and organic sweetener and it is the only sweetener used in our truffles. It is unrefined and has a low Glycemic index number. This means that it does not cause blood sugar levels to rise as much and as rapidly as refined sugars.
Cacao is an indulgence. . . everyone needs a little indulgence!

Enjoy!

First two chocolates . . . . SOLD!

Today... formally . . . . officially...momentously.... the chocolates were put out in the case for sale at The Little Red Bike. I had no time to make signs or an informational sheet or anything to identify these fantastic treats... but still two sold! I am definately not a sales person (I need Miss Rhea to come help me with that). In fact, right after the first woman (with great toad stool earrings) asked to buy the first chocolate I got kinda shaky and spilled hot coffee all over my hand and the floor. Then I ran in back and hid. I am perfectly ok handing out my chocolates to everyone (in fact that's been one of our biggest problems because we give away so many and have no money) but as soon as I'm selling them... it takes on a whole new meaning. Thankfully the toad stool woman peaked her head into the kitchen and said "The chocolate was amazing!"

I was walking on air. Actually, skipping and jumping and dancing. Yes, we do put on a show in the Little Red Bike kitchen every time a chocolate is sold.

I really have a lot to say about the chocolate(I ate one... for each one sold), but the selling part will have to take some practice. Tonight, I will hopefully have something informational written up so that I can distribute it tomorrow. I also plan on giving out samples tomorrow, so stop by the cafe to try a chocolate!

Thank you to Alli and Evan for being so rad! It's really awesome to have two people who really believe in what Rhea and I are trying to do, supporting and celebrating with us. Also thanks to Jake for making an investment in some raw chocolate and for his transportational services... he has a car. He has never been thanked publicly before and is very excited to have his name mentioned.

Peace
M

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://thechocolaterabbit.blogspot.com/2007/10/frist-two-chocolates-sold.html' title='First two chocolates . . . . It was good, it was great, it was filled with sweet intentions! ;) Alli, Jake, and I were taking lots of pictures. I felt like we had a new baby... which in some ways we do.
Another awesome new addition, the book "Naked Chocolate" by David Wolfe and Shazzie. Very good book which I plan to devour tonight.
Here are three very interesting things that I learned so far.
*Cacao contains a neurotransmitter called anandamide. It is naturally found in the human brain and is a "bliss" chemical. It fills the same receptor sites that THC (found in cannabis) does. Thus cacao can get you high... not in the same way as cannabis, but high nonetheless.

*Chocolate diminishes appetite. Apparently coco is in almost every weightloss product on the market.

*Cacao is a rich source of magnesium, serotonin, dopamine, and phenylethlamine. Magnesium is a mineral associated with active brain function and the other three are mood regulating neurotransmitters. The presence of these three neurotransmitters is associated with a higher sense of well-being. Thus cacao can make you happier and more well balanced.

There are many many more awesome properties to chocolate which I hope to blog about in the future. Until then, sweet dreams.

chocolate.slip.and.slide

Five boxes of divine chocolate have officially been mailed to Ms. Hedda in California, we are making our first batch of chocolates to be for sale at the Little Red Bike, and our myspace page, yes it is true, now has fifteen friends. We <3 heart <3 you.

Another new development- our chocolate is highly addictive. Once your body experiences the pleasure of our delectable raw vegan delights life will not be the same.

The evidence for this new development- we cannot stop eating them. We have had plans on several occasions to take them to Food Fight, Peoples, New Seasons, and the Alberta Coop to name a few, but thanks to the demands of our friends, roomates, and our lil' bellies, we are experiencing technical difficulties with this essential disbursement. Our only solace is knowing that these fine chocolates are ALIVE!~ with lots o love, goodness, and nutrition, and they are making our tummies dance.

So please, wish us luck on bringing them to you this Tuesday at the Little Red Bike,an awesome cafe on North Lombard and Fiske that is noticeable thanks to the red bike riding the rooftop, and we can't forget to mention the wonderful bike-thru window. To begin we are making 100 raw chocolates to eat (lots and lots, we eat lots) and to share with our very happy and healthy friends and roommates! And….. the dude at New Seasons who shared some fruit, the wonderful owners of Mirador (to get Rhea a job…. it worked!), and the owners of a few awesome, local, organic eateries (who will help us get our pretty little socks off the ground). We are also conspiring to send some to a wonderful and rad lady who currently resides in Kauai and San Francisco and loves our chocolate! Also to the boys in the BOG last night who drew us our first pen and ink rabbit. Yes…. in every box of raw truffles there will be a pen and ink drawing (many of rabbits) and some poetry or quotation to tickle your tummy. We are making people happy and in fine fettle (thank you thesaurus …. that does mean “healthy” for those of us born after 1943). We wish everyone a fine evening and good tasty dreams!
